Think about the last time you felt like a true VIP. Maybe it was at a hotel that anticipated your every need, a restaurant that made you feel like their most important guest, or a business that remembered your preferences before you even spoke. Now, think about the companies you’re loyal to—do they make you feel special?

Most businesses pour their budgets into marketing, branding, and gimmicks, hoping to attract attention. But what if I told you the most powerful strategy isn’t in the logo on your swag or the money spent on ads? The real secret to business growth is in the customer experience.

When a company prioritizes making customers feel valued, those customers don’t just return—they become raving fans. They tell their friends, they advocate for your brand, and they choose you over and over again. No marketing campaign in the world can match the power of a personal recommendation fueled by a truly remarkable experience.

The Strategy Is in the Relationship

During my career, I saw firsthand that relationships—not ads or promotions—drive business. One of my favorite examples was a time when the Kimpton Palomar Phoenix transformed by suite into a haven of "All things Lindsay" - from my most favorite wine complete with homemade pound cake, fresh whipped cream and berries, to fresh flowers by my bed, lavender linen spray in the bathroom and a Luke Bryan vinyl on the chair complete with a record player to borrow for my stay. I share more about this and other moments in my book, "No One Needs Another Company Mug: Stop Branding. Start Experiencing."

That moment solidified what I knew to be true: people don’t do business with brands. They do business with people. And if you make people feel seen, valued, and like VIPs, they’ll reward you with their loyalty—and their referrals.

So, my challenge to you is this: Instead of asking, How do we market better? start asking, How do we make our customers feel like VIPs? Because the companies that master that will never have to worry about marketing again.
