How a $0.50 Candy and a Handwritten Note Sparked a Core Memory

The other day, I picked up my usual Giant Direct grocery order.

It was a normal Monday. No holiday. No birthday. No expectations.Just a mom who found love for online grocery ordering so that she can also work on her to-do list that never seems to quit.

My sons helped unload the car without being asked (a rare miracle in itself), and as they carried bags inside, my son Hudson paused and held something up:“Mom… why do you have a golden Easter egg in the groceries?”

I assumed it was leftover from last Easter, forgotten in the trunk. But then I walked into the kitchen… and found a blue egg tucked inside one of the bags.

Curious and slightly confused, I popped it open.Inside was a single Almond Joy.

Random, right?

But then I remembered the golden egg and opened it too.Inside, there was a note that said:

"Woohoo! You're our lucky winner!!! Thank you for being our loyal customer. Please call Giant Direct to receive $20 off your next order. Ask for our lead 'Imani'. You're the best <3"

Let me tell you—we talked about it the entire night. We called my mom.We laughed. We felt seen. And now… I’m writing about it.

It Wasn’t in a Playbook—But That’s What Made It Magic

I know Giant Direct doesn’t have this in their employee handbook. No one’s getting quarterly bonuses for hiding candy in Easter eggs. But someone—Imani, if you’re reading this, you're the MVP—took it upon themselves to create a small, fun, human moment.

It wasn’t expensive. It wasn’t a major campaign. It wasn’t even expected.

But it was personal, thoughtful, and full of heart.

And that’s what turns a grocery store into a brand I’ll talk about, advocate for, and remember.

The Best Customer Experiences Aren’t Always “Big”

This is what I teach every day:

✨ Experiences don’t have to be elaborate.

✨ They don’t need executive approval or six-week planning cycles.

✨ They just need to make someone feel something.

And that feeling?

That’s what creates loyalty. Not points programs. Not automated thank-you emails. Not branded pens or company mugs.

Just real, genuine, unexpected connection.

Want to Create Raving Fans? Empower Your People.

Here’s the business takeaway:

The brands that win are the ones that empower their teams to show up for customers like humans.

That means giving your people:

✅ Permission to be creative

✅ Space to personalize moments

✅ Confidence that they can make a difference

If Imani had waited for a corporate-approved campaign, that golden egg moment never would have happened.

But because she was empowered to lead with heart, my kids and I had a core memory tied to a grocery run.

That’s the kind of brand experience you can’t buy—and your competitors can’t copy.

Final Thought: Make the Ordinary, Unforgettable

Want to stand out in a crowded market?Make the expected moments feel unexpectedly thoughtful. You don’t need a golden egg. You just need the mindset to create magic.

Because people forget what you sell. But they never forget how you made them feel.

Want to empower your team to create unforgettable experiences just like this one? Let’s talk about how we can build that culture in your business.
